THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY Graphic Identity Standards Guide | 7 BASIC ELEMENTS Institutional logos Clear space When using logos in conjunction with text or graphic elements, there must be a buffer of clear space around the logo. Allowing for clear space around logos improves visibility, enhances recognition, and maintains brand consistency. When there is insufficient space between a logo and other elements, the resulting combination might be misinterpreted as a de facto or alternative logo. Because the dimensions of the clear space change with the scale of the logo, we use a height reference within the logo to determine the amount of buffer needed around each type of logo. The "X" in the examples below illustrates the clear space dimension for each logo variation. For all logos with a shield, the clear space is equal to the height of the lion on top of the shield. The same clear space rules apply to both institutional logos and unit-specific logos. These clear space guidelines are for general design applications including publications, merchandise and apparel when it is necessary to place a single word, short phrase, or graphic element near a logo. The ability to make these combinations should not be seen as an opportunity to add to or create a logo by reusing the same combination across multiple projects. Usage of that nature is not permissible within brand guidelines. X X X X X X X X HORIZONTAL WORDMARK SQUARE WORDMARK
