Q: What is power-based personal violence? A: Power-based personal violence is an umbrella term for sexual assault, domestic/dating violence and stalking. Q: Does it happen at TCNJ? A: Incidents of power-based personal violence, including sexual assault, domestic/dating violence, and stalking have occurred here on campus and in every other community across the nation. In a TCNJ survey conducted in 2018, 1 in 4 TCNJ women, 1 in 7 TCNJ men, and 1 in 4 TCNJ non- binary students reported being victims of power-based personal violence in the last twelve months. These victimizations may have occurred on campus, at home, or anywhere, really. Rather than simply hope power- based personal violence goes away, TCNJ has an office dedicated to raising the visibility of these issues, providing services to anyone impacted by power-based personal violence, and leading the violence prevention efforts on campus. Q: So, what can I do about it? A: Know that Anti-Violence Initiatives (AVI) is a resource for counseling, advocacy and prevention, support victims/survivors in their healing by believing them and get involved in the prevention efforts! Q: How does the pandemic impact AVI services and programming? A: All AVI counseling and advocacy services are available remotely during the physical distancing period. For more information about scheduling an appointment, visit this website: https://oavi.tcnj.edu/get-help-2/victims-survivors/schedule-a-meeting/. Our programs are also available virtually through Zoom. For a menu of our available programs, visit this website: https://oavi.tcnj.edu/educational-trainings/ . You may request a program for your organization, or you can check out our social media for information about workshops open to the TCNJ community. A Green Dot is any action that reduces the risk of violence in the moment, supports survivors or creates a culture less tolerant of violence. A Green Dot is your individual choice to make our campus safer. Some Green Dot examples: Be a knowledgeable resource for victims/survivors, look out for friends at parties, stop laughing at sexist jokes or comments. If you do your small part, we can all make a difference in preventing power-based personal violence at TCNJ. Ways to Get Involved: Volunteer with the office! The Street Team is looking for volunteers who are willing to engage the community, raise awareness, and share prevention information. Those who are looking to complete CEL hours with AVI are encouraged to join the Street Team. Email the organization at oavi@tcnj.edu Intern with the office! AVI manages a multidisciplinary internship program to provide students with a more in-depth experience with victim support services, prevention, and the business of higher education. Take a look at the AVI website to review available opportunities! https://oavi.tcnj.edu/volunteers/ Become a Student Anti-Violence Educator (SAVE)!
