e College of New Jersey ANNUAL REPORT 2018–2019 Community Connections With a grant of $375,000 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, TCNJ will collaborate with community partners in Trenton and Ewing to create a local Youth Mental Health First Aid project that will provide mental health response training for adults working with local youth. Stuart Roe, chair of counselor education, is directing this project. Testifying on the Teacher Shortage Suzanne McCotter, dean of the School of Education, testified about the shortage of teachers in the state before the New Jersey Assembly Education Committee at the invitation of Committee Chairwoman Pamela R. Lampitt. "While the overall number of K–12 students is increasing, the number of students entering education fields is declining," McCotter said. She explained that a key focus of TCNJ's work is the NJEA-funded Center for Future Educators that focuses on recruiting middle and high school students to consider teaching as a career. Pre- and in-service teachers, school administrators, and faculty and staff from the college participated in a variety of hands- on workshops led by expert environmental sustainability educators. Mentored Research Barbara Strassman, professor of special education, language, and literacy, and students Knar Marashian '19 and Zahra Memon '19 published their manuscript "Teaching Academic Language to Deaf Students: Does Research Offer Evidence for Practice?" in the winter 2019 issue of American Annals of the Deaf. Acing It The New Jersey Department of Education released its annual Educator Preparation Provider Performance Reports, and once again, TCNJ scored well above the state average in all content disciplines, performing especially well in the STEM fields. This is vitally important for the state, considering New Jersey's shortage of STEM teachers. A+
