9 PROMOTING WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP Eleven communication studies majors and Associate Professor Keli Fazio '03 worked on Project EmpowHER, an independent study during which they examined gender disparities in leadership through a communication and behavioral lens and offered interactive strategies for combating it. Part of the project involved planning a networking brunch and community panel of local women leaders who spoke about their personal communication strategies along their journeys to success. Project EmpowHER students presented their work at the President's Reception for Donors and Scholars and at the Celebration of Student Achievement. Pending the availability of funding, TCNJ, along with Montclair State, NJIT, Rowan, and Rutgers, will lead the collaborative effort to fund the information needs of residents around the state, especially in underserved communities, low-income communities, and communities of color. Goals include supporting long-standing and start-up news outlets alike, while also launching media- literacy and civic-engagement programs. "The Civic Info Consortium will provide TCNJ students and faculty with some wonderful opportunities to innovate in the fields of media and technology," says Journalism Professor Donna Shaw. "Among other goals, the legislation specifically calls for the funding of projects that help train students in the practice of community storytelling, journalism, and media production." The legislation was conceived by the Free Press Action Fund, an advocacy group on media issues. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Communication studies majors Tyler Law '19 and Kevin Walsh '19 received the Best Comedy award for their short film "Milkman" at the 2018 Terminus Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. Terminus is the capstone event of Campus MovieFest, the world's largest student film festival. "Milkman," a humorous tale of a washed-up hero saving the day for his community and the woman he loves, was one of just 25 films from the competition chosen to stream on Amazon Prime. "Milkman's" creative team also included a number of TCNJ communication studies students, including Nolan DeVoe '18, Carly Diamond '18, Jason Monto '20, Ellie Schuckman '18, Sarina Sokoloff '18, Stephen Walsh '21, Peter Weiland '18, and Nick Wodeshick '18. Along with taking home the award for National Best Comedy, one of the most coveted awards at the festival, "Milkman" was also one of the top five nominees for Best Story.
