3 SPRING 2018 MEETING ON THE FLY I was intrigued by your article about genetic testing ("Finders Keepers," Winter 2018). As a biology major, the fruit fly lab where we studied genetics was the class I hated most. (Those flies bit.) I gained an appreciation for the topic after my adoptive parents died, and I received a copy of my original birth certificate with my biological mother's name. I purchased a 23andMe genetics testing kit and connected with a second cousin who believed her great-aunt may have been my mother. Sixty-one years after she gave me up, my mother and I met. At first, my mother was reluctant to talk to me. Back in the '50s, you had to pay your hospital bill in full or give your baby up for adoption. My mother had to promise never to look me up or have any contact with me. I explained to her that since my adoptive parents were gone, the contract was null and void. At 84 years old, she has closure from seeing me again and knowing that I did well in life. I've also met two of my sisters who were delighted to get to know me. We are grateful for the advances in science that help families who were split decades ago to reunite. DAVID KLECZEK '80 IN THE DOG HOUSE I am sorry to say the new cartoon-style Roscoe (Brag Board, Winter 2018) looks more like a dog than a lion. How could I not notice with the yellow lab pictured on the facing page? The shorter ears are the only giveaway. Oh well. EILEEN MARIN '76 Who's the real Roscoe? TCNJ Magazine VOLUME 22 NO. 3 John P. TALK UP Wearing my TCNJ shirt out in LA. Literally first human I see says, "BRO TCNJ? You from Jersey?????" @Kyl3whitlock So typically when tweeting I get 0 likes per tweet. I tweeted about TCNJ and it gets like 61 likes. That's miraculous. @Kyl3whitlock WHENEVER I SEE SOMEONE DRIVING ON THE TCNJ SIDEWALK I ASSUME THEY ARE HAVING WAY MORE FUN THAN THEY ACTUALLY ARE. @ryan_soldati Trending on Who's the real Roscoe? If you guessed 2 and/or 3, you are correct. An ancestry test on new Roscoe (3) determined that he shares DNA with both Panthera Leo (lion) and, strangely, Roscoe West (2), the college's president from 1930–57. But the test showed zero yellow Labrador DNA (1). Answer at bottom. 1 2 3
