A clue is left on a windowsill.
"The first thing you notice is the symbol at the bottom, which the kidnapper called
'the signature and three holes,' a double form of authentication. It's on 11 of the
15 ransom notes

and immediately catches your eye. The many misspellings reflect
a German accent. It's an odd ransom note, addressed like a business letter —'Dear
Sir!' — with the exclamation point in the salutation being another Germanic custom."
