11 SPRING 2018 9 KA-CHING! Ryan Chiu '19 and Jacob Boyle '19 won the $30,000 top prize in TCNJ's 2018 Mayo Business Plan Competition. They created a therapeutic device to assist individuals suffering from depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. Their prototype, MARCo (Mentally Assistive Robotic Companion), uses facial recognition technology, conversational abilities, a touch screen, a heartbeat sensor, and LED responsive eyes to help individuals feel they have company when caregivers are not available. 10 N'ice! TCNJ's club ice hockey team became the first-ever two-time champion of the Colonial States College Hockey Conference. With the win, the Lions advanced to make their first appearance in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Southeast Regional tournament before their run of glory ended in the first round. 11 No kidding More than $125,000 raised for pediatric cancer "Oh my god, I am so bald my parents are going to kill me," says Alberto Gonzalez '20, president of TCNJ's Phi Alpha Delta fraternity, after shaving his head for a St. Baldrick's Foundation event that the fraternity leads each year. The fraternity raised more than $25,000 for childhood cancer. And the fourth-annual TCNJam hosted by the college raised more than $102,000 for the B+ Foundation, an organization dedicated to kids helping kids fight cancer. 7 ONE FOR THE BOOKS The TCNJ Library is now the R. Barbara Gitenstein Library, especially apt for the president of TCNJ, an aficionado of the written word, especially when Emily Dickinson is holding the pen. "The library is the heart and soul of the campus. The board of trustees' decision to name the library for her is a fitting tribute to her 19 extraordinary years as president," said board chair Jorge Caballero. 8 What to wear The Black Student Union's Around the World Fashion Show celebrated local and global fashion. The catwalk featured African-inspired streetwear from Riveriswild, Jeantrix denim designs out of Brooklyn, and vintage clothing from Trenton-based Osgrim Shop.
