5 February 27, 2003 Board of Trustees affirms principles that have been developed for guiding transformative academic change. May 2003 Recommendations issued for revised faculty workload, aimed at creating a learning- intensive environment. Fall 2003 e new First Seminar Program, intended to create a sense of community and establish a climate that encourages intellectual engagement and serious conversation, debuts—the first step in rolling out the new curriculum to come. In a pilot program, students are housed in the same residence hall with their seminar classmates. November 2003 A conference committee meets to resolve differences on a range of issues related to the new curriculum. With launch set for the following fall, the campus feels a sense of urgency. April 2004 e new curriculum is unveiled in time for students to register for fall classes. Summer 2004 Consistent with new emphasis on mentored research, the college provides seed funding to Department of Biology to pilot the Biology Summer Research Program (BSRP). Fall 2004 Liberal Learning, a program to help ensure all students learn fundamentals of reasoning, communicating, and living in today's world, takes center stage as implementation of new curriculum begins. June 11, 2006 e American Association of University Professors awards its Ralph S. Brown Award for Shared Governance to President Gitenstein in recognition of the significant improvement made in this area at TCNJ. Since its inception in 1999, it has only been given to seven college presidents. J une 26, 2006 e college and faculty union reach agreement on implementation of transformed system of faculty work. Summer 2006 Twenty-eight faculty and 54 students from four schools participate in Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), an expanded version of BSRP. April 2007 After rigorous review, TCNJ is awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society. Fewer than 10 percent of the nation's baccalaureate- granting institutions have the honor of sheltering a chapter. Summer 2008 SURP evolves into Mentored Undergraduate Research Experience (MUSE), and becomes a permanent line in the college budget. 2010 TCNJ's curriculum redesign featured as a chapter in Building Organizational Capacity: Strategic Management in Higher Education, published by Johns Hopkins University Press and begun as an initiative of the National Association of College and University Business Officers. 2011 e Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities publishes Leading Change: How Boards and Presidents Build Exceptional Academic Institutions. TCNJ's transformation is included as a case study. Summer 2013 MUSE participation grows to 45 faculty and 92 students from all seven schools. 2014 Sixty TCNJ alumni earn PhDs, up from 32 in 2005. January 2016 Council on Undergraduate Research awards inaugural Campus-wide Award for Under- graduate Research Accomplishment (in the Master's-level institutions category) to TCNJ. December 2016 National Science Foundation data detailing baccalaureate-origin institutions of PhD recipients (2005–2014) places TCNJ second in New Jersey (to Princeton) on percentage basis. April 2017 Four TCNJ seniors awarded Graduate Research Fellowships from the National Science Foundation. Summer 2017 MUSE participation reaches new high with 49 faculty and 94 students.
