26 FALL 2017 LINDSAY BARNDT Director, Office of Student Transitions Two years of IVF treatments. Sixteen weeks pregnant. No heartbeat. Twelve hours of labor. Three ounces of what could have been. But I am grateful. For modern medicine that saved my life. For coming home to my 2-year-old, the little one still here. For being allowed to eat as many cheeseburgers as I wanted after losing a third of my blood supply. Gratitude is easy when life is good. But choosing gratitude when life destroys you? That's my story. And a deep love of cheeseburgers — just hold the pickles. CHRISTOPHER BLAKELEY '19 Civil engineering I have never fit into a particular clique, I tend to float from group to group. My grandfather taught me to be kind and to be a helper. So I am that guy that sees the outsider and befriends him. It's not always an advantage to not be anchored to a group, but I think my grandfather would be proud.
