3 Points of PRIDE BEST IN THE NATION… …our student-athletes TCNJ's student-athletes brought home some serious hardware during 2011–2012. The Lions field hockey team captured its 11th NCAA championship by defeating Middlebury College, 3-1. They were joined in the winner's circle by Danica Roskos, women's swimming and diving team member, who became the first in program history to win back-to-back national titles by placing first in the 1-meter diving event. Senior wrestler Mike Denver capped a 37-2 campaign by pinning Mike Reilly from King's College to win the national title at 184 pounds. …our student-scholars The National Communication Association (NCA), the largest and most distinguished organization of communication scholars in the United States, announced that TCNJ communication studies students have won more national honors in the form of elected officers and "best student paper in the nation" awards than have students from any other college or university in the United States. BETTERING OUR NATION Teach for America (TFA) selected 11 TCNJ students to join its ranks in 2012. Seniors Katherine Avila, Corey Dwyer, Melissa Forero, Linda Lopez, Alison Nolan, Jillian Richard, Rana Shariatdoust, Olaniyi Solebo, Rebecca Stefaniak, Randi Lynn Veenstra, and Annie Zourzoukis were accepted into the TFA Class of 2012. With the exception of Veenstra, who is attending law school, all of the accepted students began training for their contractual two-year placement last summer. Acceptance into Teach for America, which is committed to improving the performance of students in impoverished, high-need schools, is regarded as highly prestigious due to its large applicant pool and three-stage application process. EARNING HIGH MARKS • TCNJ, once again, found a place near the top of U.S. News & World Report's list of Best Regional Universities for the northern region of the country. The 2012 edition ranked the College as the number one public and fourth overall school in its category. TCNJ is one of only two public schools in the top 10 and has consistently been the top-ranked public college in the northern region since 1993. • The Princeton Review named TCNJ in three of its major publications—"The Best 376 Colleges," "Best Value Colleges for 2012", and "The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition." • TCNJ was, again, named to Kiplinger's Personal Finance's list of 100 best value public colleges for 2012. The ranking honors four-year schools that combine outstanding education with economic value. The College grabbed the top spot among New Jersey colleges and universities. • TCNJ was named to the United States President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement.
