11 Our Evolving CAMPUS THE LEARNING VILLAGE that is the TCNJ campus is evolving to better serve our students, faculty, staff, and community. CAMPUS TOWN As a result of the New Jersey Economic Stimulus Act of 2009, TCNJ has engaged in a public-private partnership to build Campus Town, a 14-acre development adjacent to campus along Pennington Road. Offering retail, restaurants, and a range of services, this complex will be sustainable, walkable, and environmentally responsible. The development will also provide student housing, a new location for the College bookstore, and will provide a vibrant new setting wherein the campus and Ewing communities can interact. Over the past year, we hosted (along with the developer, The PRC Group) public information sessions and campus forums to engage the Ewing and College communities, discuss project details and timelines, and answer questions. The project is anticipated to be complete during the spring of 2014 and is being funded entirely by the developer, with TCNJ receiving an annual ground lease. ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY In May 2012, The Princeton Review named TCNJ one of America's most environmentally responsible colleges in the 2012 edition of their Guide to Green Colleges, because sustainability is ingrained in everything we do. From designing or ordering supplies for facilities projects to various energy-savings programs to encouraging positive behaviors that extend beyond our campus, such as carpooling and the work of TCNJ's Sustainability Institute, we are constantly considering our impact on the environment. Whether we are building new facilities to LEED Silver specifications or planting low maintenance, native plants in our landscape designs in order to reduce water requirements and pest management practices, TCNJ is committed to reducing its impact on the environment. SCHOOL OF EDUCATION BUILDING Open for business for the fall 2012 semester is the new building for the School of Education. The three-story, 72,000-square-foot facility boasts 20 classrooms, a 165-seat tiered auditorium, a multipurpose room that can hold Top Left: Campus Town Top Right and Middle School of Education Facility Bottom Left: AIMM Building Built to LEED Silver Specifications Bottom Right: Engineering Equipment nearly 200, office space for faculty and administrators, as well as a café. Within the building, the classrooms themselves are teachers; in the STEM classroom, a portion of the ceiling was eliminated so that students can see the mechanical and structural systems, enhancing their learning experience. In keeping green, the building employs environmentally friendly features, such as motion-activated lighting and an energy-savings system that pretreats the air to reduce the amount of cooling and heating needed to condition the space. STATE OF THE ART EQUIPMENT Last year, the National Science Foundation awarded TCNJ two grants totaling more than $360,000 to aid in the acquisition of state-of-the-art laboratory research equipment for the School of Science and the School of Engineering. These grants enable TCNJ to continue its commitment to undergraduate research, allowing our students to work directly with the type of equipment traditionally found in major research universities and in scientific industry.
