2 TCNJ is a community that actively engages in caring for the world. Dear Friends, The 2011–2012 academic year was another period of great accomplishment for The College of New Jersey. As you will see in the following pages, we continue to be acknowledged by the various rankings as one of the nation's best public colleges. Our students and faculty have been frequently recognized for their achievements in research, community service, and ath- letic competition; they also have garnered prestigious fellowships, scholarships, commendations, and even a few national championships. Our alumni continue to fill us with pride as they assume positions of leadership and influence in the fields of business, law, healthcare, education, the arts, and in science and engineering. In this report, we have chosen just a few of the many alumni standouts to celebrate. Despite our successes, we are not a content institution. We recognize the need, as this Annual Report will attest, to embark upon new initiatives that challenge our students while sparking their passion and creativity. TCNJ also understands the importance of providing facilities and resources necessary for our talented community members to reach their full potential. Our new School of Education building is the most recent example of this type of investment. Such thinking has been a catalyst for the updated strategic planning process we launched last year. The process will contin- ue into four tracks of work this year. One area of focus is the strategic allocation of resources, and a development about which I am particularly excited is the President's Initiative on Academic Excellence. As part of this initiative, we have increased funding for faculty and student scholarship. We also have allotted funds to support faculty and staff professional development, the enhance- ment of student leadership programs, and library acquisitions. Furthermore, we are making significant investments in academic, information technology, laboratory, and arts equipment. Lastly, we are very pleased to be increasing our student scholarship allotment by nearly $900,000. TCNJ is able to make these investments because we have used resources prudently, reallocated when necessary, and been aggressive in pursuing opportunities for savings and efficiency. 2011–2012 was a year worthy of reflection and celebration, but we have been and will continue to be successful because TCNJ is a college that strives to be better every year. Sincerely, R. Barbara Gitenstein President
