On busy days, he needs four outfits — 6 a.m. military workout clothes, then fatigues, then jeans and T-shirt for class, and finally a suit for Student Finance Board. CBURN lab: Course where he was trained to respond to biological, chemical, and nuclear attacks Eight years: The length of service he'll owe Uncle Sam after he graduates JAMIE ALLEN NURSING Do-it-anyway attitude: Thinks it's cliché for a woman to be a nurse, but feels it is her calling Best Craigslist find? Career: Leaning toward midwifery They've already tasted their first adult success. Fist bumps to the Class of 2020 for being accepted into our fine institution of higher learning. Forty-five members of the class we surveyed said that getting into TCNJ had been "exhilarating." Another 46 called it "satisfying." Given that this class will emerge from its undergraduate experience in 2020, a year that comes freighted with both an expectation of perfect clarity and future-forward thinking, we declare it high time to get to know a core group of first- years — and to occasionally check back with them as they make their way to graduation. The 21st century and the Class of 2020 are roughly age mates. They've grown up together. They've left behind what defined their childhood. By the time our American century enters its twenties, these 1,513 men and women of high promise — clutching grad school acceptances and job offers — will springboard into an adulthood that's being shaped right now. We can't wait to watch it happen. —Renée Olson ➤
