FACING PAGE: PETER MURPHY (TRIPLE THREAT) P R A I R I E 3 Washington beat Trombonist Timothy Dugan '00 marched with the U.S. Marine Band in the presidential inaugural parade on January 20. That same weekend, about 100 students and faculty members took part in the Women's March on Washington, one of the largest protests in American history. And in April, another group from TCNJ headed to D.C. for the March for Science. 6 Horse ambassador Jamie Leuenberger '19 is New Jersey's 2017 Equestrian of the Year, a distinction awarded by the state's Department of Agriculture Equine Advisory Board for her dedication to protecting the horse industry and developing equine programs for youth. A Spanish major, Leuenberger plans to pursue a riding career. 5 Boy oh boy! Remember Thomas? In 2016, professor Sharon Byrne and students from her Perspectives in Global Health class volunteered at a pop-up health clinic in Haiti. There they met Thomas, a severely malnourished 15-month old whom Byrne rushed to a hospital in Port-au-Prince, as recounted in our Spring 2016 issue. Byrne (top left) and her students returned to Haiti this January and reunited with Thomas, who had gained a whopping 19 pounds. 4 City of stars Medieval history professor Celia Chazelle attended the 2017 Academy Awards to see her son, Damien, win Best Director for his much-feted film La La Land. "It was thrilling to be at the Oscars with him," she says. "He first told me he wanted to be a filmmaker when he was three years old. And he never deviated." 2 Brain trust Four TCNJ seniors won 2017 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships. Each award is worth $138,000 over three years.
