4 4 TCNJ MAGAZINE MEDALS The fall 2015 TCNJ Magazine cover story on the intellectual curiosity of our faculty earned a silver medal in the 2016 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards. The competition, organized by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, is to college communicators what the Academy Awards are to Hollywood. The issue was recognized in the Editorial Design category, edging out entries from 75 other schools from throughout North America for the honor. "The article achieves precisely what it set out to do: demystify the titles that faculty members have, and reveal their actual passions and interests," the judges wrote of the piece. "It was very well executed, and all of the elements work together to humanize the faculty and clearly convey their personalities." AQUA CHAMPS Men's swimming scores two NCAA championships M A G A Z I N E F A L L 2 0 1 5 Comments made by former President Bill Clinton during a May 13 visit to Packer Hall gymnasium, sparked an international war of words after student- run Lions Television posted his speech on YouTube. "Poland and Hungary, two countries that would not be free but for the United States and the long Cold War, have now decided this democracy is too much trouble," Clinton said during the hour-long event. "ey want Putin-like leadership. Just give me an authoritarian dictatorship and keep the foreigners out. Sound familiar?" Lions Television posted its recording of the speech to YouTube two days after the event. Almost overnight, clips of the remark—some bearing foreign subtitles and voiceovers, all bearing the LTV watermark—started circulating abroad. News stories chronicling the resulting outrage followed. Before long, Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of Poland's ruling party, weighed in. "If someone feels that there is no democracy in Poland, they should be medically examined," he was quoted as saying. FROM PACKER TO POLAND CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS A GREAT COLLEGE TO WORK FOR For the second time in three years, The College of New Jersey was recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a "Great College to Work For." TCNJ earned distinction in the "tenure clarity and process" category. The recognition follows a two-part assessment process: an audit capturing demographic and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. Only 93 colleges and universities in the United States were recognized this year. TCNJ was the only New Jersey school to be so recognized. PROMOTING TECHNOLOGY Because technology and infrastructure are essential to the college achieving its goals and fulfilling its mission, TCNJ elevated the role of chief information officer to a cabinet-level position. In November, the college welcomed Sharon Blanton to the post of CIO and vice president for information technology. Blanton previously served in a similar capacity at Hawaii Pacific University and has led successful efforts in enterprise computing services, telecommunications, instructional technology, and distance learning. "The leader of IT at TCNJ must be both an expert in the discipline and a senior leader who can collaborate with the cabinet and all campus constituents to assure success. I believe that Dr. Blanton is just that person," said President Gitenstein.
