19 Geralyn Altmiller, associate professor of nursing, is the recipient of the inaugural Linda Cronenwett Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Leadership Award. It acknowledges emerging leaders in the QSEN field for their commitment to the education of nurses and student nurses through exemplary vision, influence, critical thinking, and role-modeling. Altmiller is establishing TCNJ as QSEN's first regional affiliate. Katie Hooven, assistant professor of nursing, is updating and expanding the college's nursing curriculum thanks to a grant from the New Jersey Nursing Initiative. While past curricula have revolved around hospital- based "sick" care, Hooven plans to integrate population and community-based health into the program—emphasizing informatics and technology, systems-based practice, and quality improvement. Avery Faigenbaum, professor of health and exercise science, was ranked 6th in a list of the world's top 100 experts in sports science. The ranking was compiled by ScienceforSport.com, an educational website committed to providing "evidence- based reviews on all topics relating to sports performance from scientific peer-reviewed resources." STUDYING IN A LAND DOWN UNDER Sami Karmeh, a sophomore health and exercise science major, won a prestigious Gilman Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State to study at the University of Newcastle in Australia—a country among the world's leaders in the field of health and exercise science. Karmeh, as one of two Gilman winners at the college, will use the grant to help fund his first study-abroad experience. "I'm looking to have a career in the health field," he said. "This experience will show me how medicine is practiced in other parts of the world." IN BRIEF TOPS IN OUR FIELD NursingSchoolsAlmanac.com EXAMINED MORE THAN 3,200 SCHOOLS OF NURSING.
