During the intensive two-week program, participants took advanced, hands-on engineering courses in which they learned to build robots capable of solving a maze. To accomplish this task, the students had to learn and apply engineering concepts such as programming, computer vision, and wireless communication. The camp was organized by Orlando Hernandez and Seung-yun Kim, faculty members in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and made possible by support from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery. A LEADER IN i-STEM EDUCATION The Department of Technological Studies unveiled a new Master of Education in i-STEM this winter. It will provide in- service teachers with current, integrative teaching and learning methods applicable across all grade levels, pre-K through 12. The program will equip teachers to apply design-centric problem-based learning methods and skills in their classrooms; examine how i-STEM content and methods impact—and are impacted by—global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts; and articulate key connections between i-STEM methods and educational standards and policies such as Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. HUMANITARIAN ENGINEERING: BY THE NUMBERS Crow Creek Indian Reservation in South Dakota has a perennial problem with flooding, so in May 2015, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Michael Horst and students traveled there to assess the topography, collect soil samples, and see if they could engineer a solution. The result?
