21 The school's new Scanning Electron Microscope, purchased with state Building Our Future Bond funding, is providing never-before-seen images of ice crystals from cirrus clouds. The images are upending current climate models. Ice crystals were previously thought to be smooth as a mirror, reflecting the sun's energy back skyward. The uneven surfaces being found through the work of Nate Magee, associate professor of physics, indicate sunlight is actually being reflected in all directions. TCNJ's SEM is one of only a handful in the world capable of magnifying these ice crystals at super-low temperatures.
