23 Fire Safety Education and Awareness e Office of Occupational Safety and Environmental Services works closely with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs' Division of Fire Safety to ensure that all campus facilities are in compliance with the International Fire Code New Jersey Edition 2006. Fire safety systems protect all on campus student housing facilities. Each fire safety system consists of fire alarms, smoke detection, and full sprinkler protection in each dorm room, corridor and/or common areas of all on-campus student housing facilities. Strobe lights are equipped in certain rooms based on occupant need and required codes. All on-campus student housing facilities are equipped with fire extinguishers. e Office of Campus Police Services centrally monitors the fire alarm systems 24 hours a day, seven days a week on all campus student housing facilities with the exception of the college houses, which are monitored by a private alarm monitoring service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At the direction of the Office of Occupational Safety and Environmental Services, the Office of Campus Police Services and the Department of Residential Education and Housing perform four fire drills for each on campus student housing facility during the academic year. Two of the drills are performed during the fall semester and two are performed during the spring semester. At least one drill per semester will be held between sunset and sunrise. is drill schedule is in compliance with the International Fire Code New Jersey Edition 2006. During every fire drill each on- campus student housing facility room is inspected by the Department of Residential Education and Housing to confirm fire safety compliance. Residents found in violation of college policy are subject to disciplinary action through the student conduct process. Fire Safety Education is provided through the Office of Occupational Safety and Environmental Services to the Department of Residential Education and Housing. A Fire Safety Awareness briefing is then given through the Department of Residential Education and Housing to all occupants of on-campus student housing facilities, shortly after they move in. Fire Safety Education includes fire prevention, safe evacuation techniques, and fire extinguishers. e College of New Jersey maintains a mandatory evacuation policy. In accordance with the mandatory evacuation policy, in the event of a fire or upon activation of any fire alarm, all building occupants are required to be evacuated. Building occupants are required to exit the building via the nearest exit doors and are required to move at least 50 feet from the building. Any person who fails to evacuate during fire alarm activation is subject to criminal complaints by the Office of Campus Police Services and/or disciplinary action through the student conduct process.
