47 Class Notes SUMMER 2026 NANCY BRELAND Professor of psychology emerita In her time as psychology professor from 1972–2006, Nancy taught more than 7,000 students in courses such as introductory psychology, tests and measurement, and psychology of art. She delighted in inspiring first-semester students with her love of psychology. Outside of the classroom, Nancy was a skilled quilter. She created pieces for family and friends, taught others the craft, and displayed her work in quilt shows. She also bridged her academic role and creative passion by designing quilts that demonstrated psychology concepts and perceptual experiences. For example, to emphasize the quilting technique of adding solid colors within a mix of patterns or textures, Nancy would say, "The eye needs a place to rest." This doubled as a metaphor for the times in our lives when we need moments of peace. Nancy will be remembered as a colleague who was exacting and strong. But more importantly, she was a supportive mom, grandmother, and a friend who opened her home and heart to many.
