14 The College of New Jersey Magazine WTSR, THE COLLEGE'S AWARD-WINNING RADIO STATION, first broad- cast as an FM station in 1966. Since then, it has logged more than half a million on-air hours. "Many of those hours were masterful, featuring groundbreaking musical artists, informative news, and athletic achievements," says Gregg Savarese '97, who worked at the station as a student. "Other hours were filled with strange noises and static." Student-led with help from faculty advisors and community volunteers, WTSR has had a steady mission: to connect the campus to the community and to be an outlet for local, independent musical artists. Most importantly, WTSR operates as a hands-on lab, giving students valuable, real-world experience. "Learning to run the station equaled a semester's worth of credit," says one of the station's former managers, Kevin Quinn '75. "WTSR did more than open our minds," says another station manager, Megan Miller '06, nodding to the station's "Open Your Mind" slogan. "It taught us that the best memories are made in a basement studio surrounded by good friends and questionable decisions." Tune in here as some DJs, music directors, and station managers spin their WTSR stories.
