Prairie SPRING 2024
Starting in the late 1940s,
postcards were printed in a
photochrom process from a
black and white negative with
the color and image resembling
a photograph. This is what is
most familiar to us today.
Early on, Germany dominated
the printing of postcards.
FUN FACT
The hobby of collecting postcards is called deltiology.
FUN FACT
Because they were an easy way to send
notes home, postcards were popular items
in college bookstores. As telephones
became more popular, the use of postcards
declined. Note: There are no postcards for
purchase in the Barnes & Noble bookstore
in Campus Town today.
Postcards were originally 3.5 inches high
by 5.5 inches long in size. After the 1950s,
most were 4 inches by 6 inches.
The first commercially sold postcards
in the U.S. were printed as souvenirs for
the World's Columbian
Exposition in Chicago
which celebrated the
400th Anniversary of Christopher
Columbus' discovery of America.
