46 The College of New Jersey Magazine Remembrances Gary Fienberg Professor of music At Gary Fienberg's memorial service, a friend declared, "Gary was so alive." This, indeed, is how we'll always remember him. His tall frame bopped and grooved with ease as he directed the TCNJ Jazz Ensemble; his unmistakable deep and booming voice drew audiences into the history of each piece with vociferous program notes delivered passionately from the stage. Gary took chances on students and colleagues alike, betting on the promise of their potential. He took a chance on me when he was department chair, offering me an adjunct position in music education back in 2012, before I had much experience. He believed in me when I barely believed in myself. As a trumpet teacher, Gary wasn't fazed by students who were struggling. He patiently worked to improve the fundamentals of their playing, gradually building a student's skill and confidence as a musician. When COVID-19 lockdown caused insurmountable challenges for musicians, Gary was at the forefront of online instruction, providing support to his colleagues and modeling creative teaching. He gave students opportunities to arrange for the jazz ensemble, engage in virtual jazz performance, and stage a jazz set in a tent that was pitched outside the music building. He even dressed in full ski gear (goggles and all) to record a bit for a student virtual performance of "Sleigh Ride." His laid-back style and humor lifted us all, even in the most trying of times. Gary will still be "so alive" when we recall his voice, make a joke to lighten the mood, get lost in musical magic of one kind or another, or trust in the possibility and potential that lies within us all. He saw the best in us, and we will miss him so, so much. — Colleen Sears, TCNJ music department chair In Memoriam '30s Bernice Donini '39 '40s Jean Leefeldt '43 Doris Salati '43 Assunta Vaccarelli '43 Myrtle Birch Nutt '47 Martha Mulder '48 Madeline L.
