18 The College of New Jersey Magazine TEST OF TIME continued 1972 A minor in African American studies is established. Muhammad Ali speaks in Packer Hall and says, "The problem between white people and Black people is the worst problem in the whole world." 1987 The Loser family gives gift to college; a building on campus is named after Trenton School Superintendent Paul Loser. 1944 New Jersey Supreme Court rules race-based discrimination in public schools is illegal. 1970 Black students at the college create a list of 10 demands, which leads to the formation of a Black studies department. 1903 Booker T. Washington visits the college and gives a lecture on the "Negro Problem." 1917 The student newspaper, The Signal, in print since 1855, publishes its first image of African American students at the college.
