2 The College of New Jersey Magazine TALK UP LIONS IN LOVE We wanted to share our meaningful meet-ups with Roscoe (Looking Back, winter 2021). My husband, Don, and I met in Bliss Hall during reunion weekend in 1989. I was a student worker and Don was a new alumnus. We took a photo in full wedding attire with the lion on our wedding day on May 15, 1993. We repeated the photo in May 2017 for our 24th anniversary. Ahhh … the memories. JACQUELYN '92 AND DON '86 PILLSBURY FAN APPRECIATION I'm writing to compliment you on your spring 2021 issue. I usually don't expect publications of this kind to be so attractive, but it is lively and beautifully laid out. It seems to have just the right amount of open space and the content is thoughtful and interesting throughout. EDNA TELEP MA '95 Thank you for going the extra mile in providing an in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020. My daughter, Noelle, very much appreciated the opportunity to return to campus and receive a proper send-off. GEORGE CHANT '76 FINDING THE RIGHT WORDS I really enjoyed reading the spring 2021 issue, however, I was disappointed in learning about an English class lauding and submitting to a contest the term Covidiot ("Word gets around," spring 2021). I am hopeful, particularly in this time of significant division, that most professors at TCNJ encourage students to seek out the commonalities they share with those they disagree with as a starting point to understanding differing viewpoints, as opposed to simply assign- ing derogatory labels. While the latter may be humorous and fun, it's divisive and counterproductive to the mission of higher education. HOLLAND EISENBERG TCNJ Parent I certainly empathize with frustration regarding people not taking COVID-19 seriously, but I never liked the term Covidiot. While idiot is a common word to identify someone as simply ignorant, the word also has roots in eugenics movements, specifically identifying a person with a mental age of 2 or younger in an effort to isolate them. The word idiot in itself is ableist and harmful to groups of people. I would hope that this history would have been included in the lesson, as well as using inclusive language and refraining from bringing any additional harm to already margin- alized groups.
