30 The College of New Jersey Magazine CELIA LIU World Languages and Cultures She's a teacher full of surprises. I spent eight weeks in the summer of 2019 at National Cheng Kung University thanks to a Taiwan-U.S. Sister Relations Alliance Global Ambassador scholar- ship. Professor Liu, who was in Taiwan while I was there, arranged a surprise visit with me. It really exemplifies the special relationship I've been fortunate to build with her. I'm looking forward to enjoying hotpot with her again once restaurants reopen. I knew long before she came to visit me that I was lucky to have Dr. Liu as a professor. — Brian Ford '19 GLADYS WORD (d. 2010) Nursing She made me practice on a fellow student. She was so intimidating. Before my first injection, she made me go into a supply closet and practice three times on one of my fellow students. When I finally gave the injection to my patient, I was so proud that I did not shake until I came out of the room. I grew to love her and learned so much from her. I would not be the nurse and nurse educator I am today without her. — Linda DeRoo Merri '88 LAURENCE TAYLOR (d. 2004) Music Wouldn't this be fun? From the first day when he quipped "Greetings and hallucinations!" I knew he was a different type of professor — a whirling dervish who would burst into a classroom five minutes late with tote bags full of music scores and recordings, and a partially eaten sandwich. He was not concerned with whether we knew all the Beethoven sympho- nies. His objective was to make us curious. He led by example; encourag- ing us to attend concerts in New York City, Philadelphia, and Princeton was his way of helping to expand our mostly provincial world. "Wouldn't this be fun?" he'd say. After 20 years of teaching music at the college level myself, I still reflect on what is truly important when working with students. Perhaps it is making students interested in the world: "Wouldn't this be fun?" — David Martynuik '92
