21 Bring This Not That! Why? As stores start promoting sales on all that amazing "Back to School" residence hall room design, please keep a few things in mind. BRING THIS, NOT THAT! # 1 Aside from personal essentials, don't make major shared purchases (i.e., TV, fridge) until you have your roommate assignment. # 2 Residence hall rooms are shared spaces. You may want to pack just the essentials, knowing that Labor Day is a three-day weekend and an opportunity to stock up on anything else you need. # 3 Be aware of the policies printed in our Guide to Residence Living. There are a number of prohibited items. That cool wall-sized tapestry you bought last weekend could be a fire hazard that you would need to send back home. Here are just a few of the more common items: Surge Protector Extension cords Extension cords are meant for temporary use and can be a fire hazard with frequent or long-term use. Surge protectors will protect valuable electronics from power surges and many do come with longer cords. Portable heaters and air conditioners can overwhelm the electrical capacity of the residence halls. Candles and incense are a fire risk.
