28 First introduced to campus during Homecoming 2017, the William M. McLagan '87 Lion was welcomed officially to its permanent home — a prominent pad between Brower Student Center and the AIMM Building — during Homecoming 2018 on Saturday, October 27. The sculpture, a three-foot-tall masterpiece-in-bronze, is a gift from McLagan, a retired career Army officer who achieved the rank of colonel. He was also the first in his family to graduate from college. "TCNJ holds a special place in my heart because of my experience there — the people and the memories," he said, adding that this ornament was something he dreamed about during his time on campus in the mid-1980s. "It gives me great joy to think about this lion gracing the college campus for the enjoyment of students to come," said McLagan at the original unveiling in 2017. "It is my hope that this lion statue will continue to promote school spirit in the student body and encourage alumni to become more engaged with the college." CAST IN BRONZE THE BEACON SOCIETY The newly established TCNJ Foundation Beacon Society (which gets its name from the sun in the college's seal) recognizes the contributions of former foundation board directors and provides opportunities for their continued engagement with the college. They'll serve as mentors for current students, cultivate relationships with potential donors, and collaborate with students, staff, and other society members on special projects. In the past, special projects have included the TCNJ Day of Giving, Trenton Makes Music, and the 100 Years in Music celebration. The Beacon Society's mission of service to the college aligns with TCNJ's commitment to sustain and enhance local communities. SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT FOR MUSICIANS The Ernestine and Byron Steele Music Scholarship Fund in support of the School of Arts and Communication provides support for students pursuing degrees in music or music education. Byron retired as an associate professor of music at Trenton State College, where he taught for more than 21 years. He and Tina founded and operated The Artists Showcase Theatre and The Trenton Civic Opera Co., providing countless opportunities to local aspiring singers. Their desire was to ensure that generations of TCNJ students would have the financial support they need to pursue degrees in music. GIVING HIGHLIGHTS
