Breaking bread
"The application for the cultural exchange program asked, 'What do you like to do in your spare time?' My answer: bake. I was placed with
a host family who owned a bread bakery in Berlin. I visited the bakery often and even helped lift heavy pails of water into the mixing vats.
They once had an order for 1,400 rolls and the family had to delay leaving on holiday to make them. However, I did not get to bake at their house.
As my German mother kidded, 'The baker's wife does not have a working oven at home!'" —GAIL TOMENCHOK BALOG '70
