12 The College of New Jersey Magazine P R A I R I E Fanfare for a college TCNJ inaugurates its 16th president. AMID A BACKDROP OF BLUE AND GOLD and with academic delegates from across the region robed in a rainbow of colors, the TCNJ community celebrated a seminal moment for the institution on May 3: the inauguration of its 16th president, Kathryn A. Foster. "I am a sucker for ceremony and I dig the opportunity to wear regalia," Foster told an enthusiastic crowd of more than 700 at the Student Recreation Center. The day was Foster's opportunity to applaud the traditions and achievements of the college since its founding in 1855 (two of her predecessors, Presidents R. Barbara Gitenstein and Harold Eickhoff joined her on stage, and a third, Clayton Brower, watched via webcast from his home in Phoenix) and to accept the challenge to lead TCNJ to the next level of recognition and prestige. "We bring personal connections and shared experiences," said Foster. "And a tenacity to take on big projects that make a difference." "You now have the privilege and responsibility of leading the college to the fulfillment of its great promise for years to come," said Susanne Svizeny '79, chair of the Board of Trustees. "I cannot wait to plan with you, to explore where we have been, where we are, and where we are going," said Foster. "Here's to three tenses at once." —Kara Pothier
