L A N G U A G E T E S T I N G A N D P L A C E M E N T The World Languages and Cultures Department at TCNJ offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. The Classical Studies Program offers courses in Latin and Greek. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. Who needs to take a placement exam? All students who have selected a major that has a language requirement MUST take the placement exam prior to registering for a language they have previously studied. Incoming first-year students are encouraged to take the language placement test even if they are still waiting for their AP test results. Once results are received by the Office of Records and Registration, if a student's score is 5, this information will be recorded and language placement scores will be deleted from the student's record. First-Year Students: Students who wish to study a language they started in high school MUST take a placement test unless they qualify for an exemption (see point 2). Students who wish to start the study of a new language do not have to take a placement test. Transfer Students: Transfer students who have completed one or two semesters of a language at another college or university, and who plan to continue studying that language at TCNJ MUST take the placement test in that language. Transfer students who have an Associates Degree – AA or AS – from a New Jersey Community College are waived from the language requirement with the exception of Spanish, International Studies, Urban Education, and Deaf Education majors. 2. Who is exempt from the placement exam? • Students who received a 650 or higher on the College Board Subject Test • A score of 5 or higher on an AP test in any of the languages covered by TCNJ's language placement test (French, German, Italian, and Spanish) exempts students from the language requirement and will override whatever score a student earned in TCNJ's language placement test. • Students who have completed the International Baccalaureate Higher Level examination and received a score of 7. * Students who are exempt from the language requirement may continue with their study of the language at the 200 level, and apply any courses toward an academic minor in that language. ** Students who speak a language other than English because they grew up in a home where their parents, grandparents, or other relatives spoke it may contact the Department of World Languages and Cultures at (609)771-2235 or wlc@tcnj.edu to explore the possibility of taking a proficiency exam in that language and possibly being exempted from the language requirement. 3. What if I completed 4 or more years of language study (or its equivalent) in high school in French, German, Italian, or Spanish? Students who have completed 4 or more years of study (or its equivalent) in high school in French, German, Italian, or Spanish will NOT receive credit for 101 in that language regardless of placement. 4. Are there language exams for every language? Web-based placement exams are offered in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. To find out how to take the placement exam, see Question 5. Latin is a written test done on campus. RSVP for the Latin Placement Test should be made by June 3, 2019. Please contact Cecilia Colbeth at colbeth@tcnj.edu to make an appointment. For Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian, contact the World Languages and Cultures Department at (609) 771-2235 or wlc@tcnj.edu.
