29 2019 CONFERENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATE WOMEN IN PHYSICS Workshop Descriptions An Overview of the Oil and Gas Industry from Resource Discovery to Processing and Product Development Nicole Callen, Research Technician, Corporate Strategic Research, ExxonMobil Yanhua Yuan, PhD, Computational Physics, Corporate Strategic Research, ExxonMobil A discussion of the scientific disciplines involved in discovering, developing, and producing hydrocarbons, as well as the subsequent refining and chemicals production which convert those hydrocarbons into materials and energy that power our world. We will share our individual contributions and discuss how physics is an essential tool when resolving challenges relating to subsurface exploration and material characterization. Examples include 1) geophysics (apply physics in earth science) for discovering new energy resources; 2) X-ray microtomography for understanding the interior of rocks and materials which cannot be seen by the eye; and 3) X-ray scattering for material characterization. Identity and Intersectionality LaMont Rouse, PhD, Assistant Director of Assessment, Center for Institutional Effectiveness, The College of New Jersey Don Trajan, PhD, Director, Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, The College of New Jersey is workshop will introduce participants to the theory of intersectionality and its various permutations and implications in the classroom as well as the workplace. e workshop will seek to engage participants in an overall discussion of how multiple self-identities influence individuals in the workplace, and how others interpret these identities. Using a guided question and small group discussion approach, this interactive workshop will attempt to teach practical strategies for understanding others with the intent of building a more inclusive learning and workplace environment. e workshop will also include a discussion of common barriers and how these barriers can be turned into learning opportunities for creating a more dynamic workplace.
