27 2019 CONFERENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATE WOMEN IN PHYSICS Breakfast 8–8:30 a.m. Brower Student Center 100 Plenary Talk 2: "You are a Scientist" 8:30–9:15 a.m. Mayo Concert Hall Emily Rice, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, College of Staten Island, City University of New York According to a 2012 President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology report, less than half of college students planning to major in a STEM field continue on to graduate with a STEM major, and the retention rates are even lower for women and racial/ethnic minorities who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields. To help you beat the odds, I will discuss research results on the impact of identity, belonging, and self-efficacy on persistence in STEM fields and share my own reasonably traditional but still unlikely path to become tenured faculty member in physics and astronomy in the largest urban university system in the United States. Emily Rice PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the College of Staten Island of the City University of New York (CUNY), faculty in the physics PhD program at the CUNY Graduate Center, and resident research associate in the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). She studies low mass stars, brown dwarfs (sometimes called "failed" stars), and directly-imaged exoplanets by analyzing their spectra and modeling their atmospheres. Her research group, Brown Dwarfs in New York City (BDNYC) has received funding from NASA and the NSF, and she is a co-author on 30 refereed publications. She earned her PhD at UCLA in astronomy and astrophysics and undergraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in physics and astronomy and German. She frequently gives public presentations, including at the Hayden Planetarium at AMNH, and makes media appearances, produces science parody videos, organizes and hosts Astronomy on Tap events at bars in NYC, and shares astronomy-inspired fashion on the STARtorialist blog.
