4 The College of New Jersey Magazine TALK UP INTRAMURAL GLORY DAYS We wanted to share an intramural story (Up Front, Fall 2018) on behalf of Wolfe 10 (also known as The Penthouse Players). In fall 1996, we fielded several intramural teams, all of which went winless. Our winter basketball season started much the same way, but we had one magical afternoon. Airballs suddenly swished through the hoop; rebounds bounced into our hands; passes were deflected off our faces to waiting teammates' hands. With a few seconds left in the game, and down one point, a teammate shot a turnaround jumper that had us shouting, "No, No, No, Yes!" Pandemonium ensued as The Penthouse celebrated our first, and only, win of the season. MATT MIDDLETON '00 KEITH MAZZONE '00 DAVE KRICHEFF '00 Toward the end of my freshman year, a classmate encouraged me to come out for intramural lacrosse. The first day, I caught a ball on the run at top speed with arms fully extended and it was such an exhilarating experience. I reveled in the lack of boundary lines and rules which slowed other sports. Now, I follow the TCNJ teams with great interest and wish them every success. JUNE BELLI HEMMINGSON '56 PRIME VIEWING After reading about students Tyler Law and Kevin Walsh winning the National Best Comedy award at the 2018 Campus Movie Fest (Brag Board, Fall 2018), I rushed to watch Milkman on Amazon Prime. The five-minute film was creative, funny, and shot on location at TCNJ. Thanks for sharing it. DEBRA KADY SHIPERS '81 GOOD TO HEAR Congrats to contributor Luke Aboff '20 for the amusing and honest recount of his life with hearing aids ("Heard on Campus," Spring 2018). As a teacher for kids with hearing loss, I can feel his nightmare, but I am thrilled to see that he successfully navigated his way to college. Hats off to his wise "polka-dot" mom, who persisted in doing what was right. She's truly one in a million, as is Luke. EILEEN CONLOW '98 LIVING DEMOCRACY Twenty-five members of Travers' fifth floor from 1978 met for a reunion during the 2018 Alumni Weekend. Our floor was special because it served as an Intentional Democratic Community. We were a self-contained and self-governing community within the campus and were truly democratic in our structure and governance. There were about 95 students who lived on the floor who engaged in experimental, psychosocial interactive exercises and went on retreats each semester. We routinely held floor meetings to review the various rules we had set for ourselves — and to ensure that everyone was doing their assigned duties. A hallmark of our IDC was that we were responsible for our own cleaning: hallways, laundry room, foyer, bathrooms, and the lounge. As we became more well known around campus, one joke was that IDC stood for I Do Cleaning. And we did, usually. The money that would have gone to housekeeping was transferred to us, and we voted on how to use it. The campus today has become a most impressive array of buildings and resources. From our perspective of 40 years ago, it was difficult to orient ourselves, but all credit to the wonderful ambassadors who took us around the beautiful campus. Wow, were they young looking! One of our highlights was a trip back to the fifth floor of Travers. "Hey! They painted over my King Crimson!" exclaimed Judith Samuels '80 as we toured the hallways. Yes, really, how could they do that? A few of us, in true independent IDC spirit, opened a couple of the dorm room doors (sure, we knocked first). "It's the same furniture!" We walked past our old rooms, took photos, and posed for a photo where the pay phones used to be. That was humorous as we stood there with our cell phones to our ears.
