11 FALL 2018 Students can enjoy two new outdoor spaces this fall: Trenton State College Park, a sitting area in front of Roscoe L. West Hall that reflects the history of the college and alumni pride; and a sculpture installation (above) in the courtyard between the STEM Building and Lake Ceva. Featuring benches and a chalkboard, it serves as a gathering space and an outdoor classroom. Q U I Z How many hot dogs did Carmen Cincotti '15 down in this year's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest? Answer: 63 — enough for a second-place finish. 13 SPREAD THIS NEWS Students powered through sandwich construction for the United Way's annual Peanut Butter and Jelly Race, donating nearly 1,100 sandwiches to local organizations. Their fast moves netted them an honorable mention in the annual Student United Way awards competition. 14 Howard Hughes is right here Howard Hughes Medical Institute selected TCNJ to join its prestigious Inclusive Excellence Initiative. The college will receive a $1 million grant over five years to support diversity and inclusion in science education. 8 Growing by degrees The first class of students pursuing master's degrees in public health starts this fall. MBA candidates will follow on their heels in fall 2019. 9 HONOR ROLE Former president R. Barbara Gitenstein received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Princeton University in June. The award recognizes her efforts to improve TCNJ's four-year graduation rate, which now ranks among the highest in the nation for public institutions. 12 TAKE IT OUTSIDE Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber congratulates Gitenstein. 11 " A must read for those who believe that good people can't succeed in politics."— Former Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell on a new book by former New Jersey Governor Jim Florio '62, Standing on Principle: Lessons Learned in Public Life (Rutgers University Press). 15 STATE HOUSE VISITOR New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy dropped by campus in August to sign legislation to expand public-private partnerships, such as the one that resulted in TCNJ's mixed-use Campus Town.
