36 The College of New Jersey Magazine San Francisco, CA Sparks, NV Austin, NV Ely, NV Salt Lake City, UT Idaho Falls, ID Jackson, Bozeman, MT Two days of orientation June 15-16 Ravikumar: "The anticipation was freaking me out. I didn't know anyone; we were sleeping on a cold gym floor." FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA The first week was overwhelming. Okun: "We went up 3,000 feet." Ravikumar: "It was getting hard to breathe, and I got stung by a bee." Alana Okun '19 and Vaishali Ravikumar '18 set out on a 49-day adventure this summer across the U.S. They ran 10–16 miles a day, as part of a relay, with a team of 24. They stared down bison, rationed bug spray, and ate too many granola bars in the Ulman Cancer Fund's 4K for Cancer. ■ Nevada's Route 50: the Loneliest Highway Loneliness and knee pain plagued Okun: "I called my mom crying, and she said to give it a week, and if needed, I could find a little airport in Idaho and fly home." Local hosts provided potluck dinners along the way. Ravikumar: "I worried about getting enough food, but people were so generous."
