FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA
The first week was overwhelming.
Okun: "We went up 3,000 feet."
Ravikumar: "It was getting hard to
breathe, and I got stung by a bee."
Alana Okun '19 and Vaishali Ravikumar '18 set out on a 49-day adventure this summer
across the U.S. They ran 10–16 miles a day, as part of a relay, with a team of 24. They stared down bison,
rationed bug spray, and ate too many granola bars in the Ulman Cancer Fund's 4K for Cancer. ■

Okun:
"I
called
my
mom
crying,
and
she
said
to
give
it
a

and
if
needed,
I
could

Local hosts provided potluck
dinners along the way. Ravikumar:
"I worried about getting enough food,
but people were so generous."
