27 FALL 2018 CARL GIBBS '93 NUMBERS GUY AND TCNJ TRUSTEE Carl Gibbs played both offensive and defensive tackle for the football team at Pemberton Township High School in New Jersey, but he knew he would never play professionally. He aimed instead toward a career in business. "In a lot of my classes, I was the only one of color," says Gibbs, who earned a degree in business administration at Trenton State with a concentration in marketing. He is the president and CEO of Sturdivant & Co., a brokerage firm in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, and he serves on The College of New Jersey Board of Trustees. "I give back because going to college there changed the trajectory of my family," he says. "My middle daughter is looking at PhD programs in psychology now." He stays close to a core group of about 40 EOF friends. "It's such a reunion when we get together because we know where we started from." ■ Kevin Coyne is a freelance writer who teaches at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.
